Nightfoot stood alone amongst a clearing within the pines, the earth beneath their paws still damp from yesterday's rain. They had challenged their apprentice, Jaypaw, to a short race to their training spot for the day, and unsurprisingly, they had beat him there. Older than their clumsy apprentice, and named for their speed, Nightfoot had been sure of their win from the outset. Still, speed challenges were one method of training in their mind. A warrior would face much harsher threats than a civil competition.
Nightfoot wasn't actually sure how suited Jaypaw was to warrior life. His manners and temperament were nice enough, but he didn't seem to have much fight in him. And that's precisely why today's training would be fighting. They showed little frustration toward him, though they often wondered why they had been chosen for him. Perhaps they seemed too patient.
The sun hadn't been up for long, and in spite of the sparse trees where Nightfoot was planted, the ground was cold underneath their paws. It was just a small while after the dawn patrol had been sent out. Nightfoot knew that Rowanpelt hadn't been sent on the patrol, and he was supposed to be here with his with his apprentice as well. Pride glowed in their chest - they had, of course, gotten there before the other two cats. The only reason Nightfoot had extended an invitation to pair up with Rowanpelt was to show him up. Their skills may not specifically lay in fighting, but they were sure that they could one-up him on being a mentor.
For the time being, they needed to wait.
