Willowtail lay curled in her nest in the nursery. A piece of rabbit lying in front of her and had been setting there since sunrise. She wasn't hungry. It had only been two days since Hawkeye had been killed. She hadn't eaten anything since they brought his body back to camp. She knew she should it if not for herself than for her kits. But she couldn't find the will to eat. So she lay there staring into space and thinking of Hawkeye.
She was Willowpaw again and Hawkeye was trying to teach her how to track a rabbit. She had just tried and it heard her long before she got any where near it. He had called her a mouse brain telling her rabbits could hear her coming, that she sounded like an angry badger stomping around. She had been embarrassed and had vowed to do better next time. They spent the rest of the day training until she got in in her thick skull as he said it. Even back than they were closer than a mentor and an apprentice should be. He pushed her harder than other apprentices because he wanted to see her become the best. It was obvious the two where head over paws for each other by the time she got her warrior name. No two cats where ever meant to be together as they. She was the sun and he the moon. One couldn't live without the other. Now she knew how her father felt all those moons ago when her mother died giving birth to her and her sister.
The sound of paws approaching brought her back to reality. Stretching her stiff bones that she hadn't moved in nearly two days. "Hello, who's there?" She called out her voice harsh from un-shed tears and dry from the lack of water. She hadn't drinking at all that day.
