Leafbare was the worst time of the year - for obvious reasons, of course. Prey shortage, tensions between the clans are high, and it's just plain cold. The cold was awful. So why was the leader out in the cold? At night? In the middle of the night, for that matter? Why not be in the comfort and warmth of a moss filled den? Well, Heatherstar didn't know. Couldn't sleep, she supposed. Her gaze flickered off into the thick of the forest. She had felt uneasy all day. It felt as if something had shifted in the forest. Though what that was, Heatherstar couldn't put her paw on it. There had been no news from other clans, and no particular bad weather had happened earlier in the day. Heatherstar grumbled softly to herself, and shook out her head. A small sigh escaped from her jaws as she rasped, "I know you're there." Leafbare always gave the she-cat a sore throat. It's not that serious, she would say, every leafbare to the medicine cat despite many protests.

She let out a sigh. "Are you sure its safe to be out in the dead of night? Isn't it a little cold?" She cocked her head sideways. "Are you sure you're sore throat isn't going to act up? I'd hate to see you get stricken with whitecough or greencough because of this when I should have stopped you."

"Bah." The ginger leader scoffed, her tail sweeping across the ground in annoyance. "I'm not going to hurt the clan by wasting scarce resources on something as insignificant as a sore throat." Her gaze swept across the deputy as she settled herself next to the leader. "Save them for a cat who really needs them." Heatherstar curled in on herself, settling down into a small dip in the ground and curling her tail around her body. "Could you not sleep as well, Wolffire? Or are you just here to be my kitsitter." A small ounce of amusement slipped through her words. Moments passed in silence before Heatherstar spoke again, this time in a smaller voice. "I have a feeling the forest won't be the same for much longer. Don't you feel it, too?"

And maybe even the other Clans. Who knows what will happen if something changes? The peace will be lost and that wont be a fun thing at all. There's already too much bloodshed happening, and I don't want to know what is to come." She glanced up at the stars, praying to her family. Mother, father, Moonpaw, please watch over our Clan through this hard time. And please, watch over Creek-kit as he continues to grow and become curious. I don't know what I would do if anything happened to him. She brushed her tail over the ground slowly, lost in her thoughts.

Heatherstars' eyes softened as a feeling of worry washed over her and the deputy as the night dragged on. "I promise Creekkit will be safe." Her voice raspy and quiet, though loud in the silence of the night. No sounds of prey, or of insects. It sounded more like stillness. "Our clan will be safe, no matter what it is that is happening in the forest." The leader tried to choke back the feeling of doubt that crawled it's way into her throat, though she failed to do so.

"It makes my fur stand up just thinking about Creek-kit being in trouble. And if I weren't able to help him..." she trailed off, her voice filled with sorrow, "I don't know what to do. He may not be my blood-son, but that doesn't matter. He almost reminds me of myself as a kit - playful, curious, and oblivious to the outside world. I was so oblivious. Maybe if I hadn't, then my family wouldn't have died." She dug her claws into the cold and hard ground in frustration and grief.

"Wolffire!" Heatherstar hissed, voice cracking every now and again, making the threatening undertone not as strong as the leader wanted. "You can't live in the past. 'Maybe's' and 'what if's' won't change what happened. That's why you have to strive to be better!" The ginger leader lashed her tail furiously back and forth as she stood in anger, and in shock. It wasn't like any of this was new, she knew what happened, and Wolffire brought it up quite a lot. It was shocking that she still hung onto it. It was understandable, Heatherstar supposed. But to cling on this long? "Creekkit will be a wonderful warrior," Heatherstars voice softened slightly as the anger ebbed from her body. "And so are you." She returned to her deputies side, her tail resting gently on the small black cats' shoulders. "I did not choose a weak deputy, so stop acting like it."

I know I shouldn't focus too much on the past but... it doesn't really help when I still have nightmares about that night. I see them die over and over again in my dreams and it makes it hard to let go." When she heard Heatherstar tell her she didn't pick a weak deputy she smiled a little bit. "Yes ma'am" she meowed, amused. She licked at a bit of fur on her leg that was sticking up.

"Loosing clanmates is tough, I know." Heatherstar mumbled, her gaze drifting off towards silverpelt. "But we all have to move on, even though it may be difficul-" The leader paused, stopping her words. Was that pawsteps? Heatherstar definitely heard something. A intruder? Heatherstar sprang to her paws. The dead and brittle grass crackled underneath the sudden movement, echoing throughout the silent forest. "Who's there?!" The ginger leader yowled into the thick stillness of the night. It was probably loud enough to warn the clan, if she needed them. Heartbeats passed without a sound, and the fur on Heatherstars' back bristled. "Show yourself!" With the moon shining fully overhead there would normally be enough light to see oncoming cats, but Heatherstar saw no one. Being sneaky, are you? That's fine. Crouching low to the ground, the leader unsheathed her claws. It didn't sound like a large group of cats - maybe one or two at the least. Heatherstar could take them.

♫ вιc ~ ♫ Wolf-fire's ears pricked when she heard the pawsteps. She swivelled around, orange eyes alert. She heard her leader call out to the intruder and she braced herself. Based on the pawsteps, she guessed it was only about one or two cats.

Creek-kit was excited. He snuck out of camp following his mother, and no one noticed! He had puffed his chest out in pride when he was out and followed Wolf-fire. He stopped a distance away and heard the conversation between his adoptive mother and leader. He hadn't known about Wolf-fire's family because she wouldn't tell him. Without thinking, he stepped foward to comfort her, but stopped, remembering that he shouldn't be seen. He was playing a game with them after all. Unfortunately he stepped on a twig, and with that, Heatherstar and Wolf-fire were alerted to his presence. "Who's there?!" he heard Heatherstar yowl. Mousedung I was caught. He stayed still until he decided he didn't want to get attacked and stepped out of the shadows. "I got you guys! I followed you out Wolf-fire and no one noticed! Aren't you proud of me?"

Heatherstar felt the anger immediately vanish from her body as the tiny kit emerged from the shadows and thick of the forest. Fear, some kind of toned down anger, and pride replaced the feelings in her paws. Fear, because dear starclan anything could have attacked this kit on it's wander out of camp. He could get hurt, or he could catch a cold. Not to mention it's breaking the code! "You definitely did a good job, Creekkit." Heatherstar flattened the bristled fur on her back and settled back on her hind paws. Her tail flicked in slight annoyance. "But it was foolish! Didn't you think you could get hurt?"

Creek-kit's chest puffed out when Heatherstar said he did a good job. However, when she started to scold him, he looked down at his paws. "No, I guess I didn't. I thought that StarClan would watch over me, and I could always yell for help if something happened. I'll be more careful next time. And I'll go outside only during the day." He looked at his mother. "Wolf-fire is that okay? Would you show me the forest some day?"

Wolf-fire looked at Creek-kit. "I won't be allowed to since it goes against the warrior code, but one day, your mentor will show you. When you're an apprentice." she added firmly. "Now lets get you back to the nursery."
